PlatinumGames wants to make more live service software – doesn’t everyone right now? – but it’s going to have to do better than Babylon’s Fall, which is off to a pathetic start. We’re still putting together our review – look out for that soon – but early indications are awful for the Square Enix published hack-and-slash.
For example, on PC storefront Steam it peaked with about 650 concurrent players. As a comparison, God of War – which launched all the way back in January, and isn’t a live service game – peaked at just over 5,000 players today. Okay, it’s not necessarily fair to compare a massive, established name like God of War to Babylon’s Fall – but we’re just trying to put things into perspective.
It’s unlikely to get any better either, because this long-in-development effort looks rubbish. In an attempt to drum up some enthusiasm, Square Enix paid a bunch of popular streamers to play the game, which is a relatively normal practice for publishers to do these days. Unfortunately, we don’t think the investment has paid off in quite the way it anticipated, as clips like this demonstrate:
So, yes, Babylon’s Fall – a game filled with presumptuous Battle Passes and recurring gameplay loops, with very few people ever likely to engage with them. Making live service games is notoriously difficult, so perhaps we shouldn’t go too hard on PlatinumGames here. Still, this one has been in development for an eternity – one has to wonder whether it’ll ever make back its development costs.

hope it flops . too many games of this genre , where’s metal gear revengeance 2 , platinum ????
I can't take Square Enix seriously when they complain about Tomb Raider or Hitman not selling well when they then turn around and fund crap like this, Quiet Man, and Balan Wonderworld.
It can only be good since it was made by Platinum games. **Checks games they made**... Oh... They made Star fox zero... Nevermind!
I think we could all see Babylon’s fall months before the release…
This game will be a major flop and probably the nail in Platinum's coffin before they get purchased by MS or something.
I want the game to succeed, so Platinum Games survives and hopefully makes good games in the future. I also want Square Enix to do well. The game doesn't look good, though. This is probably why Platinum Games is talking about getting acquired and such.
Oh Lord it looks terrible. Really hope this doesn’t sink Platinum.
I thought the demo was alright. Not something I’d buy at full price, but definitely something I’d grab if it was on sale.
Couldn’t get myself to push myself through the demo beyond the 12 minutes I spent with it. It felt and looked like a low budget ps3 action game.
I find it hard to believe that this game is made by PlatinumGames.
It sadly not surprising. Too bad too because I remember the first trailer released before the live service stuff got introduced actually looked pretty fun but something clearly went wrong at some point in development because it just looks so unappealing now.
And considering the stiff competition of games from last month that people are still playing along with some strong looking titles in March it's pretty hard to see them being able to turn it around.
Yeah I think is clear Platinum will be purchased really soon but who will be the buyer? They have a mix record but when they have the budget and time they put out excellent stuff and they are masters of action hack and slash.
Regardless of who gets them I just don't want the entire company to go under, Capcom would probably be the best fit for them and maybe we could get a DMC x Bayonetta.
Sony should definitely step in and purchase square Enix their games have so much potential but keep dropping the ball I think Sony could get them over the hump.
Platinum has been on a bit of a downward spiral really hasn’t it?
It should have been F2P. $60 for a game full of micro transactions is a huge turn off even if it was decent.
@get2sammyb Their second downward spiral in the span of a decade. I wonder if Bayonetta 3 will bail them out like Nier Automata did.
@get2sammyb Where did they go wrong aside from this game? Even if not a mega hit, their last game I remember, Astral Chain was well received.
@PSfan4Life22 I admire square enixs risk taking, sure some will flop but at least they are trying.
This always felt like this was the B team at Platinum working on this. Not the Metal Gear Rising Platinum but the Mutants in Manhattan Platinum
Does getting influencers to play still work for sales? I always find it a turn off as I know they wont keep playing outside of the sponsored vid
It's a live service game, so it doesn't matter if it's bad. They can just make it better in the future.
I don't understand why the heck SE didn't make nier automata 2 with yoko taro and platinum rather than this game.
Nier automata sells 5M+ so rather than making the sequels SE order yoko taro to make card game and order platinum (known for single player games) to make live service games?
@Milktastrophe don't know about that.
Anthem, battleborn, brink, and others have entered the chat
The reveal trailer for this game was unimpressive, yet somehow it looks worse every time I see it lmao.
It's a pity. There's clearly a ton of talent at that developer, but a lot of what I've seen over the years screams mismanagement.
That first pic looks like a Ps3 remaster of a ps2 game lol! This'll be ~$30 by the end of the month
So they've been busy with this rubbish instead of Bayonetta 3 have they? would explain the silence I suppose. Hopefully this rubbish flops completely.
@Jaz007 Astral Chain was pretty average. Most of it positive reception came from being a Switch exclusive.
I mean I played the demo and it lacked the swift tight gameplay platinum games are known for, wonder how well that battlepass will sell cause sales are looking weak.
Bayo 3 aside i can't say i like where Platinum are going, i feel like the Platinum if old is gone
@Jaz007 Astral Chain was a surprisingly excellent evolution of their traditional character action game design. Like NieR Automata, it felt like it had a lot more to offer than just flashy action gameplay.
Kinda wish we were getting Astral Chain 2 instead of Bayonetta 3.
I don't think Square quite know how to manage the development of live service games. I think their mentality is just...wrong and possibly stems from the same attitude that dismisses the likes of Hitman, Guardians of the Galaxy and Tomb Raider reboot as failures.
@CynicalGamer Since when was Hitman considered a failure?
@Jaz007 See https://www.pcgamer.com/square-enix-could-no-longer-invest-in-hitman-but-knew-it-wouldnt-be-hitman-unless-made-by-io/ - Cyn's point isn't that Hitman was a failure, but that the bloodless suits leading SE considered it a failure, despite freely admitting that both the games and the people making them were awesome, because the franchise just wasn't panning out as a low-effort license to print money like they were looking for.
@Jaz007 Judging from their 2013 financial reports. Sleeping dogs as well.
Edit: @Fath explained it better than me
Oh I love seeing live service games fail. This just made my evening. 😁
“Looks” awful but willing to keep an open mind. Pokemon Legends Arceus ‘looked’ awful too.
Fingers crossed
@Jaz007 since square enix decided to get rid of IO interactive after hitman 1 came out
What went wrong? Erm.. everything by the looks of it.
Square to Investors:
Square:
‘Hey we’re partnering with Platinum, which put out the multimillion seller, single player & critically acclaimed Nier: Automata.’
Investor:
‘So Nier: Automata 2 & aren’t they busy with Bayonetta 3?’
Square:
‘No we got them to drop everything and are having them make a budget live service game. They’ve never made one before, but we have faith.’
Investor:
‘Really? Are you sure?’
Square:
‘Please be excited.’
@get2sammyb I wouldn't go that far, the last two games they did were Nier: Automata and Astral Chain, both outstanding games in my opinion. They've misstepped in the past, I'm sure once Bayo 3 comes out we'll forget Babylon's Fall ever existed.
@PSfan4Life22 I just remembered the awful review scores of that Balan thing 🤣
@Rhaoulos also that stupid Madworld
Man it's already fallen!
Played the demo. Gameplay was fun however it's going toi get very repetitive by the end of game. Then there's the battle pass, afaik only the first one is free. then there is microtransactions and full price to pay at launch.
This is going F2P within 6 months.
They should've released it for free or at a lower price since it's a live service game. Also, the oil painting style really sucks and the game's visibility is not good at all. I can barely see/admire the environment due to the weird oil painting style throughout the demo :/
Is this why phil spencer turned platinum games down for actually completing scalebound or is it the other reason "we use funds for other games". One of the 2 amirite.
I've played almost every platinum game since the brutally epic wii game mad world and I know I will want to buy this even if it is awful. Square Enix may have bought platinum for this game but they didn't bring their special talent that is Hideki kamiya who is currently working on bayonetta 3. Hideki deserves better I still hope he goes back to capcom and work on playstation games again someday.
@Rhaoulos ewww Star Fox Zero. The first time I have bought a game on preorder and made a loss when I traded it in a week later (having only played an hour in that week) for how bad it was. The Wii U and Nintendo weren't kind to that game.
I was invited to play the early closed beta. The linearity was utterly boring and gave no incentive to progress along more of much the same grind. Nothing in the gameplay, story or graphics was engaging in the least. Even the social area was awfully dull and lifeless. I watched some current gameplay and it seems very little, if anything has changed.
Still waiting for Anarchy Reigns 2...
I think it looks great. Defo gonna dig out my PS2 just for this.
@get2sammyb "Platinum has been on a bit of a downward spiral really hasn’t it?"
I don't think that's true. If you go back in their history they've ALWAYS made some stinkers (Korra, Star Fox 0, TMNT) and some very average games, perhaps with an interesting mechanic but little else (Anarchy Reigns, MadWorld, Infinite Space). The bangers are less than half of their output.
Can’t wait to hear Square say this game “didn’t meet expectations” like they do with every other game they’re involved with.
So..... Babylon fail? A lack an slash?
I'll see myself out
Square Enix will probably throw the devs under the bus like they did Crystal Dynamics rather than admit their live service greed is the problem,sadly! 😕
Meantime Square Enix stay silent on Octopath Traveller ever seeing light of day on ps4/5 despite almost being a year after its Xbone release & reduce the early FF games to mobile ports instead!
Blame square more than planium really think they would of learned from avengers.
Just hoping strangers of paradise doesn't turn out a stinking turd like this.
@FatalBubbles
They could make a game that' sells 8 billion copies and they would still it doesn't meet expections
@themightyant what??? Korra was great.
@FatedGuardian Square Enix is a multi billion dollar company that owns Final Fantasy, they aren't making games like this only publishing them. This was Platinum Games.
Can you imagine someone paying for console launch exclusivity for this thing?
@naruball We all have some games we like even if they're janky and bad, nothing wrong with that.
But Korra was panned by critics and most users alike. It sits at a woeful 49 (XBO) and 54 (PS4) on Metacritic, that's objectively not a good game even if you subjectively liked it.
Though I'm convinced it deserves worse. I loved the series initially, though it's no Avatar, but the game was truly awful imho. If you took away the Korra license and the Platinum name you were left with a very thin excuse for a videogame. 3/10
@Enuo
Weird take considering it averaged an 87/100 on Metacritic.
This is great news, I hope it flops terribly and they never attempt another game like this again.
If i had followed the advice about crap games in the past (necromunga hired gun,godfall,outriders,immortals fenix rising) i'd have missed out on four good games there..i enjoyed all of them so i'll give this a punt at some point..
Platinum is the most inconsistent developer. MadWorld, Bayonetta 1 and 2, NieR and NieR Automata, Vanquish, Metal Gear Rising and AstralChain are all great games. But for those games you have complete trash like all the licensed nonsense, this and disasters like the failed Scalebound project.
@themightyant "If you took away the Korra license and the Platinum name you were left with a very thin excuse for a videogame. 3/10"
I couldn't disagree more. And, following your logic, isn't the game "objectively" better than a 3?
I cant remember my SE account password. Resetting it to play a demo was to much work.
After watching the promo video on the PS5 home screen I simply deleted it. Nothing to do with it being a "live Service", it just looks awful.
@Fath I knew what he meant, I was just unaware of that situation and remembered Hitman 3 wing considers successful. They probably regret it now lol. But thank for linking that to me.
@suikoden This is 100% correct.
Well, Drakengard series was janky and never an eye stunner but developed a cult following, so anything is possible for Babylon’s Fall, I guess. Of course, Drakengard has rich lore shared in the same universe as Neir making it much more interesting. Also, Drakengard 3 might be one of the best games ever made! (Half joking)
If Babylon’s Fall is still around in 5 years it’ll be interesting to see what the perception of the game is compared to now. Maybe it’ll gain that cult status.
I've been playing the demo and it's alright in my opinion. I'll wait for a sale probably though. The battle pass is free so I think they know where the wind is blowing on that front. Wouldn't shock me if they retool it by the time Season 2 is set to launch.
Should've been a cross/multi platform game. Risky doing new ips as a live service games
Liveservice
when this game was announced in 2018 , it looked like it had alot of promise. then it went away for a bit and came back and looked worse. they ruined this game. i would normally not agree , but i agree stay away this game is awful. its a shame because this could have easily been a really good game.
Can’t wait for this game to come to Xbox. And for Crossfire X to go to Playstation.
